Custom Home Builders on Maine Coast | Our Story

On the rugged coast of Maine, where the salty air shapes both the landscape and its people, a story of craftsmanship, family, and legacy began. The story of Generations Custom Homes isn't just about building houses; it's about a foundation laid long before the company ever drove the first nail.

It starts with a father and a son. Richard Sprague Sr., a respected contractor and owner of Andy's Painting, understood that a successful business was built on more than just skill; it was built on integrity, hard work, and a deep understanding of the community you serve. Working alongside his father, a young Richard "Ricky" Sprague Jr. absorbed these lessons like the Maine pines absorb the morning sun. He didn't just learn the trades; he learned the business. From his father and a crew of seasoned, older-generation craftsmen, Ricky learned the timeless principles of running a successful general contracting business, how a handshake still matters, how a reputation is your most valuable asset, and how to master the unique ins and outs of building along the demanding Maine coast.

This invaluable apprenticeship forged in him a passion for creation and a clear vision. In 2002, with his father's wisdom as his guide and a dream of his own, Ricky took a leap of faith. He founded Generations Paint & Construction. The name was a deliberate tribute to the knowledge passed down to him, a promise to honor the legacy he inherited.

Three Generations of Custom Home Building Expertise in Hancock County

The early days were fueled by passion and perseverance. With just a few dedicated guys and a shared vision, Generations Paint & Construction began to make its mark across Hancock County. They took on projects big and small, earning a reputation for reliability and quality. But as the years went on, a new passion emerged from the work. While the painting and general projects were rewarding, the team's true calling was to create something entirely new, to take a client's dream and an empty plot of land and build a home from the ground up.

From Generations Paint & Construction to Premier Maine Coastal Home Builders

This natural evolution led to a pivotal moment. The focus had sharpened, the specialty honed. It was time for the company's identity to reflect its true purpose. Generations Paint & Construction segued into a new chapter, rebranding as Generations Custom Homes. This wasn't just a name change; it was a declaration of mastery. It was a commitment to focusing exclusively on the art and science of building bespoke coastal Maine homes, infused with the passion and precision craftsmanship that clients had come to expect.

Today, Generations Custom Homes is a cornerstone of the Maine coastal building community. The small crew has grown into a large, dynamic team with multiple crews working daily, year-round, to erect the most beautiful and enduring custom homes in the region. The dream that started in 2002 is now a thriving reality.
